Chandigarh, Oct 6: Sixth seeded Indian Sumit Nagal's winning spree was terminated by Juan Pablo Focovich of Argentina in the singles semi-final of the $ 54,160 ATP Challenger in Campinas, Brazil.
In the semi-final match, Sumit Nagal was at the receiving end in both sets. Juan Pablo Focovich clinched the final berth defeating Nagal in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 21 minutes on Saturday.
Sumit came under pressure from the beginning. He was beaten in the first games of both sets. In the first set Juan Pablo Ficovich broke Nagal to take a 2-0 lead.
The Indian lad faced another break in the next set. However, Sumit just managed to save his service to make it 3-4. Juan Pablo Ficovich went on to grab the set at 6-4 in 45 minutes.
Ficovich raced to 2-0 lead in the second set. He first broke Nagal in the first game and then won his service game without conceding any point. He again broke Nagal in the third game to raced to a 3-0 win.
Despite three games down, Nagal did not lose heart. He fought back and broke his rival in the fourth game to reduce the margin 1-3.
In the fourth game, Nagal trailed at 15-30, 15-40 facing two break points. Nagal bounced back and neutralised the lead making deuce. Yet lost the other point to give his rival advantage position which Ficovich capitalised to break his rival for a commanding 4-1 lead.
Nagal had an opportunity to break Ficovich in the sixth game as his rival trailed 30-40 but the Argentinian player first made it deuce and than gained an advantage which he converted on his service to be in the driver's seat with a 5-1 lead.
With Nagal serving in the seventh game, Ficovich broke him to win the set and game at 6-1. (UNI)
