New Delhi, Oct 6 : Former World champion and five-time Asian gold medallist Sarita Devi went down in the opening bout after losing 0-5 to Russia's Natalia Shadrina in the 60kg category of the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia on Sunday.
It was a unanimous 0-5 verdict ending Sarita's journey at the Worlds.Sarita, a gold-medallist in the 2006 New Delhi edition of the showpiece, was chasing her maiden world medal in over a decade.
At the start of the bout Sarita was confident in her approach and kept her opponent on backfoot.
However, the Russian came back strongly in the next two rounds edging out Sarita.
The two Indian boxers who have progressed to pre-quarters of the Worlds are Saweety Boora (75kg) and Jamuna Boro (54kg) after emerging victorious in their opening matches.(UNI)
