Buenos Aires, Sep 29: Diego Maradona suffered his third straight defeat as manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima on Saturday with a 2-0 home loss to River Plate in the Argentine Superliga.

Colombian midfielder Jorge Carrascal put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute before veteran forward Nacho Scocco made it 2-0 with a 74th-minute strike. The result lifted River to sixth in the 24-team standings with 14 points from eight matches, four points behind leaders Boca Juniors. Gimnasia remained rooted to last place with a solitary point.

Maradona began his tenure as Gimnasia boss with a 2-1 home defeat to defending champions Racing Club on September 15 followed by another 2-1 loss to Talleres Cordoba last Monday.

In other matches on Saturday, Boca Juniors were held to a 1-1 home draw by Newell's Old Boys and Arsenal Sarandi secured a 3-0 home win over Estudiantes. XINHUA
