Ex-Brazil goalkeeper Ceni sacked as Cruzeiro boss

Agency News

Rio De Janeiro, Sep 27 : Record-breaking former Brazil goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni was Thursday sacked as manager of Cruzeiro after less than two months in the role.

The announcement came barely 12 hours after Cruzeiro's 0-0 draw at Ceara, a result that left the Belo Horizonte club 16th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings. Local media reported that the 46-year-old had fallen out with his players in recent days over his decision not to select several senior players, including former Brazil midfielder Thiago Neves.

Ceni ended his playing career in 2015 after 1,250 matches for Sao Paulo in a career spanning 24 seasons. He was capped 16 times for Brazil's national team and was a part of the Selecao squad that won the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

A specialist free-kick and penalty taker, he is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest-scoring keeper of all time with 131 goals. Cruzeiro did not immediately name a replacement for Ceni, who led the club to just two wins after taking charge on August 11.

Meanwhile, Cruzeiro's Serie A rivals Sao Paulo also announced that they parted ways with manager Cuca on Thursday after a 1-0 home loss to Goias.

Six-time top flight champions Sao Paulo are currently sixth in the standings, 13 points behind leaders Flamengo. (XINHUA)
