Rio lawmakers back Maracana standing room proposal

Agency News

Rio De Janeiro, Sep 25 : Lawmakers in Rio de Janeiro have voted in favor of plans to re-introduce standing room at the iconic Maracana Stadium.

The proposed legislation secured majority support in Rio's state parliament on Tuesday and is now awaiting final approval from governor Wilson Witzel.

The move would allow an additional 8,000 fans to attend matches at more affordable prices than seated tickets, according to the bill's text.

"The Maracana needs to reinforce its historical ties with lower income earners," the bill read. "Authorization ... would [allow] the Maracana to rediscover its history and strengthen its ties with the people."

The Maracana, which hosted the 1950 and 2014 World Cup deciders, currently has a capacity to seat 87,000 fans. It has been fully seated since being refurbished at a cost of 500 million US dollars for the 2014 World Cup. (XINHUA)
