Buenos Aires, Sep 23 : Argentina U-20 midfielder Thiago Almada converted a late penalty as Velez Sarsfield secured a 2-1 victory at River Plate in the Argentine Superliga.
Nicolas Dominguez on Sunday put the visitors ahead with an angled finish after Lucas Robertone's headed flick. Nacho Fernandez equalized from close range just before the hour mark and 18-year-old Almada held his nerve from the spot in the 83rd minute to earn Velez Sarsfield the win after he was chopped down by Franco Armani.
River Plate had a chance to equalize six minutes later when Nicolas Dominguez blocked Paolo Diaz's shot with his hand - earning the midfielder a second yellow card in five minutes as the visitors were forced to play out the match with 10 men.
However, Nacho Fernandez's subsequent attempt from the penalty spot was kept out by Lucas Hoyos. The team managed by former Argentina international defender Gabriel Heinze have now won four consecutive matches and are seventh in the 24-team standings. Reigning Copa Libertadores champions River dropped to 10th with just one win from their past four fixtures.
In other matches on Sunday, Newell's Old Boys won 2-0 at home to Aldosivi, Banfield won 2-0 at Godoy Cruz, Lanus won 2-0 at home to Colon and defending champions Racing overcame Arsenal de Sarandi 2-1.(XINHUA)
