Changzhou, China, Sep 19 : Chinese ace Chen Yufei fought a tough 71 minutes battle to move past South Korean An See Young 20-22, 21-17, 21-15 in the first round at the BWF China Open here on Thursday.
An took a game point from Chen by surprise in the first set and fought tenaciously in the following sets.
Chen established her advantage over An in the middle stage of the first set, widening her lead to 15-8. Unexpectedly, An reversed Chen's favorable run, reaping eight nearly consecutive points to tie the score at 16-16.
Chen held game point but her continuous faults gave An a chance to score four points in a row to upset her in the first set.
The second set was a closely-fought battle. There was no significant superiority for both sides before Chen finally won this set 21-17. An made the early running in the third, leading 10-6 until Chen suddenly accelerated her speed and scored 6 consecutive points to reverse the lead.
After An's exhausted counterattack, Chen continued with seven scores in a row to take the set. (UNI-XINHUA)
