Changzhou, Sep 19 : Reigning world champion PV Sindhu crashed out of the China Open Super 1000 tournament after going down to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals, here on Thursday.
Sindhu lost to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-12, 13-21, 19-21 in a thrilling contest which lasted for more than 50 minutes.
India's top shuttler started off strongly and won the first game confidently by 21-12. However, Chochuwong hit some powerful smashes to turn tables and forced the decider by winning the second game.
In the final game, Sindhu took an early three-point lead but Chochuwong was quick to close-in the gap.
In the end, the Thai player won 6 points in a row and and sealed the deal in her favour by 19-21. Chochuwong will now face China's Chen Yufei in the quarters.
Earlier in the day, Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy also lost to Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo of Japan 11-21, 21-16, 12-21 in the second round of the mixed doubles event.
Before that, Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty had lost their second-round match 19-21, 8-21 to Japan's Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda in the men's doubles event to get knocked out of the tournament.
Among other Indians, Parupalli Kashyap and B Sai Praneeth will also be in action, while Ponnappa and N Siki Reddy will take on the second seeded Japanese duo of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi in the second round of the women's doubles competition. (UNI)
