ATP Challenger: Saketh crashes out, Balaji-Vardhan enter second round

Chandigarh, Sep 12 : It was a mixed day of results for Indians in the ongoing ATP Challenger Tennis Tournament in Shanghai, China. Saketh Myneni lost to Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the second round, while in men's double first round match, N Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan thrashed the pair of Collin Altamirano (USA) and Vladyslav Orlov (Ukraine) 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Having got a first round bye, Saketh Myneni, 13th seed, made his exit despite firing 12 aces against Sekiguchi in the $ 81,200 ATP Challenger Tennis Tournament. Trading stroke for stroke, Myneni and Sekiguichi kept the spectators on the edge of their seats until the end of the match. They split the first two singles and the third and final set was also extended to a tie-breaker. It was anybody's game.

However, Sekiguchi proved lucky today and clinched the victory with a thin margin.

The Japanese player won 101 total points in comparison to 94 by Myneni. Sekiguichi saved 67 percent of break points (4/6) and Myneni saved one out of three (33 per cent) of break points.Sekiguichi won two of three break points and Myneni won two out of six.

In the men's doubles match, Indian pair of N Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan defeated the pair of Collin Altamirano (USA) and Vladyslav Orlov (Ukraine) 6-1, 6-2 in the first round match.

In another match, Indian duo of Arjun Kadhe and N Vijay Sundar Prashant put up a stiff resistance to third-seeded American pair of Evan King and Hunter Reese. The evenly fought match was claimed by the American pair 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 verdict in one hour and 30 minutes.
