Manila, Sep 11: Yeng Guiao stepped down as the Philippines men's national basketball team head coach on Wednesday, just a day after the team returned from a disappointing 2019 FIBA World Cup campaign.

The Philippines finished last in World Cup after failing to notch a win in all five games and accumulating the worst point differential in the tournament with -147 points.

"I knew what conditions existed, what the limitations were, and still, I accepted the challenge. I hold myself responsible for the consequences," he said in a statement.
"I am sorry we could not deliver a better performance," he added.

Arriving in Manila from Beijing, China on Tuesday morning, it did not take long for Guiao to decide to resign. However, he said he has no idea what the future holds for the team until he discussed with top officials of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the country's basketball sport governing body.

After the meeting between Guiao and SBP officials led by chairman emeritus Manny Pangilinanon and president Al Panlilio on Tuesday, he made up his mind eventually.

"To all fans and friends who wished us well, supported us, and offered their prayers, I am grateful from the bottom of my heart," he said, adding that he considers the participation in the FIBA World Cup "as the highlight of my career."

''I am stepping down, as of today, in order to give the SBP a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best," he concluded.

While Guiao has resigned, the national team doesn't have the luxury of time finding a new mentor to help to defend the championship in 2019 Southeast Asian Games which will be held in the Philippines later this year. (UNI-Xinhua)
