Madrid, Sep 9 : FC Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has given an interview in his homeland in which he made a couple of comments which probably won't be well received at the Spanish club.
The central defender joined Barca in the summer of 2016 and produced two good campaigns before a knee problem severely limited his participation last season. Speaking to French TV network Canal Plus, Umtiti admitted that he had suffered the problem during France's triumphant World Cup campaign in Russia in 2018, but had played on.
"I forced my knee during the World Cup, but now I am a World Champion and you have to take some tough decisions in your life," he said. "I am not at all sorry I did it," emphasized the defender. Umtiti's poor campaign with Barca in the wake of winning the World Cup led to several rumors that the club was willing to sell him in the summer or include him as part of the failed deal to bring Neymar Jr back to the Camp Nou from Paris Saint Germain.
"I don't know where that rumor came from," said the defender. "I got some messages from friends about it, but Barcelona is Barcelona." "My objective ever since I was little was to play for Barcelona. I came here to win titles and to be at the club for a long time," he insisted. (UNI-XINHUA)
