Bratislava, Sept 2 : The Slovak national team failed to resist the power and skill of Italy in its maiden round-of-16 match at the 2019 Women's European Volleyball Championship and lost 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 on Sunday in front of a national-record crowd of 6,430 spectators in Bratislava.
And it was a very special match for Slovakia's coach Marco Fenoglio. The Italian-born manager of the Slovaks had to lead his squad against players from his home country. He used to coach a lot of the members of Team Italy and knew about their numerous strengths.
The second set could have gone both ways, but Italy, silver medalists from the 2018 World Championship did not allow Slovakia to threaten their advancement plans and closed the set emphatically.
The Italians will face Russia in the Quarter Finals that will be played on Wednesday in the Polish town of Lodz. The Russians won their Eight Final matches in Bratislava against Belgium 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22 on Sunday.
