Bopanna crashes out of US Open, Indian campaign ends

New York, Sep 2: India’s campaign at the US Open ended after Rohan Bopanna lost both the men’s and mixed doubles events here at the final Grand Slam of the year. India's top-ranked doubles player and his Canadian partner Denis Shapovalov suffered a 3-6, 4-6, loss against the 15th seeds Neal Skupski and Jamie Murray of Great Britain in the round of 16 on Sunday night. The Indo-Canadian pair fought for one hour 15 minutes against their rivals before going down.

Bopanna lost in the pre-quarter-final stage of the mixed doubles as well. Bopanna and Abigail Spears of the United States went down fighting 5-7, 6-7 (4) against French-American pair of Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo. With Bopanna’s exit, India’s challenge came to an end in the US Open as Leander Paes and Divij Sharan had already made first round exits in the men's doubles event. While in the singles event, Sumit Nagal and Prajnesh Gunneswaran had also suffered first round defeats against Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev respectively. (UNI)
