Chandigarh, Aug 21: Second seeded pair of Rajeev Ram (USA) and Joe Salisbury (Great Britain) beat Leander Paes (India) and Jonathan Erlich of Israel in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3, in doubles first round match of the $ 717,955 Winston-Salem Open ATP 250 Tour in US on Wednesday. The second seeded pair took just 54 minutes to dispose of the wild card pair.
Paes/Erlich were broken in the first, third and fifth games of the first set as they trailed by 0-5. Ram/Salisbury were broken in the sixth game as Paes/Erlich won their first game in the first set but went on to hold their serve in the seventh game to make it 2-5. However, Ram/Salisbury wrapped up the set by holding their service in the eighth game (6-2). In the second set, the score was 2-2 before Paes/Erlich were broken in the fifth game and Ram/Salisbury took a 3-2 lead and went on to keep their rivals under pressure and clinched the set at 6-3 and the match.
Ram/Salisbury won 52 points out of the total 85 points whereas Paes/Erlich could manage to score 33 points. Earlier, top seed Benoit Paire of France terminated the progress of Indian Pranjesh Gunneswaran in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in the singles second round. Sumit Nagal of India advanced to the second qualifying round in the US Open. In the first round Indian Davis Cupper Nagal defeated Tatsumo Ito of Japan by 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Sumit Nagal is now pitted against Canadian Peter Polansky in the second qualifying round. UNI
