Hyderabad, Aug 20 : The 8-day, first ever International Grand Master (GM)Chess Open Tournament in Telangana State began at Hotel Marriott here on Tuesday.
To mark the inauguration a symbolic match was played between Grand Master from Russia Savchenko Boris and Bharath Singh Chauhan, Hon Secretary, All India Chess Federation. Known as Tetrasoft Hyderabad Marriott Grand Master Chess Tournament 2019, 160 including 45 from Telangana and 22 International players from 10 countries are competing in the tournament.
Savchenko Boris, Smirnoff Pavel, Triapishko Alexandr, Soboleva Anastasia from Russia; Tulare Adam from Ukraine; Mosadeghpour Masoud from Iran; Vasquez Schroeder Rodrigo from Chile; Khusenkhojaev Muhammed —Tajikistan; Ziatdnov Raset—USA; Kavind Akila, De Silva LMST, Priyankara Chamil from Sri Lanka; Gias Uddin Ahmed, Md. Abzid Rahman; Babul Mollick from Bangladesh and Dangi Mani Raj, Gurung Bijay, Karki Yam Kumar, Mahar Chaman Gaha, Shah Ram Surat Prasad, Regmi Shikar and BK Shivam Kumar from Nepal.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Chauhan said India has become the powerhouse of Grand Masters. “Currently we have 64 Grand Masters in India. In the next three years we will cross 100. India is a Grand Masters country”, he declared. “Telangana is in Grand Masters Circuit as it has produced four Grand Masters. India is making rapid strides in Chess. We will rule world in Chess. There should be a tournament like this every year in Hyderabad”, Mr Chauhan added.
Major K Shiva Prasad, Vice President, Telangana State Chess Association said Chess was born in India. It was called Chaturanga, then went to Persia and Europe and became Chess.” Cricket is played by only by 25 countries, but, Chess is played in 200 countries, `` he said. “Chess is taught as a subject in Russia. By the year 2020 we will broad base Chess in India. Future world Champions will come from India only”, he said.
A Narsimha Reddy, Chairman Bar Council, Vice President All India Chess Federation and President Telangana State Chess Association said, “We will take Chess to nook and corners of the state. Every district will become hub for Chess”.
According to Srikanth, organizer from Tetrasoft, the first ever Grand Master Tourney to be held in the state of Telangana comes up with the biggest ever prize money. The total prize money of Rs 12 lakh. The first prize is 2.5 lakhs. It is one of the very few chess tournaments to be held in a five star hotel. GM open Chess Tournament is being organised after a gap of six years, he informed. The tournament will be played in league system. There will be ten rounds. All the players will play ten rounds.
