Cincinnati, Aug 18: Twenty three years old top seed Aussie Ashleigh Barty was stunned (6-2, 6-4 ) by 34-year-old Russian wild card holder Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Center Court of the Western and Southern Open WTA Tour 1000 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, here on Saturday.
The one hour and eight minutes long women's singles semi-final encounter, Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova denied Barty’s attempt to return into the world no.1 position . Barty could have grabbed the top ranking she lost last week to Japan's Naomi Osaka had she reached the final. Kuznetsova had won the US Open title in 2004 and the Roland Garros crown in 2009. The semi-final began just at the conclusion of the Next Generation Clinic at the Center Court.
Experienced Kuznetsova kept her first service 73 per cent in and won 78 per cent points (25/32) on her first service and 67 per cent points (8/12) on the second service. The Russian player won four out of five break points and saved one break point out of two.
Ashleigh Barty recorded 51 per cent of her first serve in while Svetlana Kuznetsova winning 58 per cent points (15/26) on first service and 52 per cent points (13/25) on the second service.
