Kannur, Aug 17 : Kerala's lone Olympic medalist and veteran hockey player Manuel Fredericks on Saturday said "he was very much happy to know that he has been recommended for Dhyan Chand award-2019."
Talking to UNI over phone from Bengaluru, Mr Fredericks said "this is the lucky year in my life as two dreams were fulfilled. One is the prestigious Dhyan Chand award recommendation and the other is the fulfillment of my dream to own a house at my native place in Kannur district."
The house was constructed by the Kerala Government as a gesture to the Olympian.
Fredericks also got the chance to play hockey with two sons of Dhyan Chand, Ashok Kumar and Raj Kumar, in the Indian team.
Fredericks began playing hockey at the age of 12 while he was studying at BEMUP school, Burnasserry in Kannur and later joined Army service at the age of 15.
He made his debut in the Indian hockey team as a goal keeper in 1971 and represented India in two world cups at Holland in 1973 and Argentina in 1978.
The veteran Olympian from Kannur and presently living in Bengaluru along with his family - wife and two daughters.
Even at the septuagenarian age, he is coaching hockey to school children.(UNI)
