Bopanna-Shapovalov upset Rajeev-Salisbury in Cincinnati Open

Cincinnati, Aug 15 : The Indo-Canadian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov crushed Olympian medalist Rajeev Ram of USA and Joe Salisbury of Great Britain in the men's doubles first round fixture in the Western and Southern Open ATP Tour 1000 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov beat their rivals in straight sets 7-6 (6), 7-5 in the match which lasted one hour and 27 minutes on Wednesday.  The first set progressed with the service and a couple games were won at love by both pairs. With 6-6 deadlock, Bopanna/Shapovalov emerged winners in tie-breaker at 7-6 )8-6).

The second set became more tense. In the fourth game Bopanna/Shapovalov had some anxious moments as the score was 40-40 deuce with deciding point which could have gone either way. However, Bopanna/Shapovalov managed to retain their service to make it 2-2. In the 11th game Bopanna/Shapovalov gained the vital break after enjoying two break points (30-40) on service of Rajeev/Salisbury.

Bopanna/Shapovalov led 6-5. Rajeev/Salisbury were leading 40-15 on Bopanna/Shapovalov service. However Bopanna/Shapovalov rose to the occasion and made it 40-40 before clinching the game and match at 7-5.

Bopanna/Shapovalov played a controlled game. They impressed with their service as they fired 11 aces and committed two double faults. Their first service was 68 per cent in. They won 75 per cent points (38/51) on their first service and 71 per cent points (17/24) on second service. They saved six out of six breakpoints and converted one from four break points.

Rajeev and Salisbury had four aces to their credit and committed two double faults. They kept their first service 64 per cent in. They won 87 per cent (39/45) on their first service and 56 per cent points (14/25) on second service.

Rajeev and Salisbury saved three break points out of four but could not win even a single break points out of six which came their way.

Earlier, Bohan Bopanna from Bengaluru had made it to the doubles main draw as alternate. (UNI)
