Bangkok, Jul 31: Starting the campaign on a high note, India's mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa on Wednesday defeated Malaysian silver medallists Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in the first round of Thailand Open.
Recording one of the biggest wins of their career, the unseeded Indian pair fought for one hour and two minutes to beat fifth-seeded pair of Soon and Ying by 21-18 18-21 21-17. Ponnappa and Rankireddy will now face Indonesia's Alfian Eko Prasetya and Marsheilla Gischa Islami in the second round.
Meanwhile, in men's singles fifth seeded Kidambi Srikanth had a tough contest and he took one hour and seven minutes to get past Chinese qualifier Ren Peng Bo by 21-13 17-21 21-19. Srikanth will now face Thailand's Khosit Phetpradab in the second round. In Women's singles , seventh seeded Saina Nehwal made a winning return from her injury hiatus, progressing to the second round by defeating Phittayaporn Chaiwan 21-17, 21-19.
P Kashyap also made his way into the second round after a hard-fought 18-21 21-8 21-14 win over Misha Zilberman. Another Indian shuttler, HS Prannoy defeated Hong Kong's Wong Wing Ki Vincent by 21-16,22-20 while Sourabh Verma lost in the opening round. Sourabh struggled for 64 minutes against seventh seeded Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan before going down 21-23 21-19 5-21.
Subhankar Dey got lucky as he was given a walkover by top seed and world number one Kento Momota of Japan in his opening round contest. In mixed doubles, Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki Reddy managed to defeat lower ranked pair of Kohei Gondo and Ayane Kurihara 21-16, 21-13 in 36 minutes to progress into the next round.
In women's singles, Sai Uttejitha Rao Chukka lost to China's Chen Xiao Xin by 17-21 7-21 in the first round. (UNI)
