Rio de Janeiro, Jul 15 : Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Gabriel Barbosa combined for five Flamengo goals as the Rio de Janeiro giants beat Goias 6-1 in Brazil's Serie A championship.Uruguay midfielder Arrascaeta gave the hosts an early lead by sweeping in a first-time finish following Gabriel's neat one-touch pass at the Maracana stadium on Sunday.
Kayke Rodrigues equalized from close range after Rodrigo Caio scuffed an attempted back pass. It took just two minutes for Flamengo to restore their lead when Bruno Henrique poked in following a goal-line scramble.
Arrascaeta then netted his second goal, again capitalizing on clever work from Barbosa by taking a touch to control the latter's cross before thumping a shot past goalkeeper Tadeu Ferreira.
Gabriel provided his third assist for Arrascaeta on the stroke of halftime. Having been released by the Inter Milan loanee on the left flank, Arrascaeta appeared to be attempting a cross but his shot looped over Ferreira and rebounded in off the far post.
Flamengo's attacking duo continued to show uncanny understanding after the interval. Arrascaeta swung in a cross from the left that Gabriel nodded in just before the hour mark and the Uruguayan then unselfishly provided a slide-rule pass that wrong-footed Ferrera and allowed Gabriel to hammer a shot into an unguarded net.
The victory lifted Flamengo to third in the 20-team standings, six points behind leaders Palmeiras.
It represented a perfect start for former Benfica and Sporting Lisbon boss Jorge Jesus, who was taking charge of Flamengo for the first time in a competitive fixture.
