London, Jul 14 : Brilliant bowling spell by Chris Woakes 3/37, Plunkett 3/42 restricted New Zealand at 241/8 in 50 overs in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup here at Lord's on Sunday.
Nicholls 55 off 77 (4 fours), Latham 47 off 56 (2 fours, 1 six) and skipper Williamson 30off 53 helped New Zealand reach 241/8 in the stipulated 50 overs. Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat with openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls putting up 29 runs for the first wicket before Guptill was lbw by Woakes giving England a breakthrough picking early wicket in the very 7th over.
New Zealand were 29/1 when they lost Guptill at 19 off 18 (2 fours, 1 six).
In 15 overs New Zealand reached 63 with Nicholls 27 and skipper Kane Williamson 9 against England.
Continuing their form Williamson along with Nicholls further shaped the innings cautiously and went on to build a strong partnership adding 74 run-stand for second wicket.
Meanwhile 100 also came up for Kiwis in 22nd over. However, another blow was waiting for Black caps when Williamson's innings was put to end by Plunkett caught by wicket-keeper Buttler in 23rd over at 103/2. Williamson 30 off 53 (2 fours).
Willamson became the captain with most runs (578) in a single edition of World Cup surpassing former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene's record of (548 runs) in 2007 World Cup.
After 74 run stand between Williamson and Nicholls for second wicket small partnership came into form of 15 runs for the third wicket Taylor & Nicholls then 23 runs for the fourth wicket between Taylor and Latham and for fifth wicket 32 runs between Neesham and Latham.
New Zealand's third wicket fell in form of Nicholls in 27th over after scoring 9th ODI half-century 55 off 77 (4 fours) when Plunkett grabbed his second wicket. The Black Caps were 118/3 in 26.5 overs.
Ross Taylor was the fourth victim lbw by Wood in 34th over. Taylor scored 15 off 31. Kiwis fifth wicket fell at 173/5 in form of Neesham in 38.6 overs caught by Root when Plunkett bagged his third wicket.
New Zealand's sixth wicket went down at 219/6 when Grandhomme was removed in 46.5 overs by Woakes picking his second wicket.
Grandhomme 16 came in 28 balls. Tom Latham was seventh victim when Woakes grabbed his third wicket at 232/7 in 48.3 overs. Latham fell 3 runs short of half century 47 off 56 (2 fours, 1 six).
Archer took his first wicket sending Matt Henry at 240/8 in 49.3 overs. Henry 4 off 2 (1 four).
Mitchell Santner 5 off 9 and Trent Boult 1 off 2 remained unbeaten.Woakes 3/37, Plunkett 3/42, Wood 1/49 and Archer 1/42 were the wicket grabbers for England. (UNI)
