Taunton, Jun 17 : Shai Hope 96 off 121, Evin Lewis 70 off 67 and brilliant 116 runs for the second wicket, Hetmyer 50 off 26 helped West Indies put up a challenging 321/8 in 50 overs against Bangladesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup at The Cooper Associates County Ground here on Monday.
Hetmyer, became the 4th quickest West Indies batsman in 28 innings, after going past 1000 run mark completing 47 runs in the 39th over in Mehidy Hasan Miraz spell taking one run. The other who are ahead of Hetmyer are greats like Vivian Richards (21), Gordon Greenidge (23) and Sarwan (27).
Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss, and elected to bowl put in West Indies to bat. West Indies opening pair Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis had a disastrous start adding only 6 runs for the first wicket when Mohammad Saifuddin gave a breakthrough for Bangladesh sending Chris Gayle early for duck after facing 13 balls in the 4th over caught by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
With Gayle's exit Shai Hope came in and along with Lewis played a sensible innings going for singles rather than playing big shots and going for boundaries against short balls went on to put up an excellent partnership of 116 runs for the second wicket.
West Indies second wicket fell at 122/2 in the 25th over in form of Lewis who was looking solid after being bowled by Shakib Al Hasan.
After Lewis gone, 37 run partnership was built between Pooran and Hope for the third wicket, but Pooran had to go when Shakib Al Hassan took his second wicket in the 33rd over at 159/3. Pooran chipped in 25 off 30 (2 fours, 1 six).Another excellent partnership of 83 runs happened between Hope and Hetmyer for 4th wicket. However, Hetmyer's innings ended in the 40th over after Mustafizur Rahman struck his wicket at 242/4. Hetmyer scored quickfire 50 off 26 smashing 4 fours and 3 sixes.
Lewis punched 70 off 67 which included 6 fours and 2 sixes. Russell was sent for duck in 40th over at 243/5 bowled by Mustafizur Rahman.West Indies sixth wicket fell at 282/6 in form of skipper Jason Holder in 44th over in Mohammad Saifuddin's spell after scoring quick 33 off 15 (4 fours and 2 sixes).However, wickets kept falling, but Shai Hope playing a patient knock stood firm at the other end keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Hope's innings finally was ended by Mustafizur Rahman in the 47th over after scoring 96 off 121 balls falling 4 runs short of his century (4 fours, 1 six). West Indies lost its seventh wicket at 297.Towards the end of the innings Bangladesh bowler Saifuddin bowled three wides of which Darren Bravo also hit a six and then lost his wicket in the last ball of the final over scoring 19 off 15 (2 sixes). Oshane Thomas remained not out at 6 off 11. Mustafizur Rahman 3/59, Mohammad Saifuddin 3/72, Shakib Al Hasan 2/54 were the wicket takers for Bangladesh. (UNI)
