Southampton, Jun 14: England restricted West Indies on a total of 212 runs in the World Cup match at the Rose Bowl stadium here on Friday.After put into bat, West Indies seemed to be struggling from the begining of the game and suffered a loss in the third over as Evin Lewis (2) walked to the pavilion.
Chris Gayle with Shai Hope played handsomely and added 50 runs for the second wicket. Gayle and Shai could have taken this partnership ahead, if Liam Plunkett hadn't struck in the 13th over to dismiss Gayle on a score of 36 runs of 40 balls. In the same over, Mark Wood dismissed Hope on a score of 11 runs.However, Nicholas Pooran's brilliant knock of 66 runs off 77 balls helped West Indies to get some relief. Pooran's with Shimron Hetmyer (39) stitched a 89- runs-partnership for the fourth wicket and took West Indies to 144 runs but the much needed partnership journey came to an end in the 29.5 overs as Root struck and dismissed sent Hetmyer back to the hut.
As the partnership broke, West Indies once again started struggling for runs as none of the other batsmen from there contributed much. Jason Holder (9), Andre Russell (21), Sheldon Cottrell (0) scored respectively.In 39.4 over Pooran fell to Archer as he was caught by Jos Butller. He left West Indies on a score of 202 runs.At the end quick runs by Carlos Brathwaite 14 off 21 balls took West Indies on a score of 212 runs.For England, Jofra Archer and Wood took three wickets each while Joe Root took two wickets and Liam Plunkett, Chris Woakes took one wicket apiece.
