Taunton, Jun 8: New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson unbeaten half century 79 off 99 and Ross Taylor 48 off 52 helped Black Caps beat Afghanistan by 7 wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup here on Saturday.
Chasing a target of 173 runs New Zealand completed their task in just 32.1 overs with 17.5 over to spare after losing 173/3.
New Zealand opener Martin Guptill went for a duck in the very first spell of the 1st over of Aftab Alam's spell.
With Guptill's exit skipper Kane Williamson came in and along with Colin Munro put up 41 runs for second wicket.
Then in the 8th over Aftab Alam took his second wicket in form of Munro. Colin Munro 22 off 24 (4 fours).
Aftab Alam scalped his third wicket that of Ross Taylor in the 26th over. Taylor 48 off 52 (6 fours and a six).
However, skipper Williamson 79 (9 fours) and Tom Latham 13 off 18 remained not out. In the end Williamson scored the winning runs for New Zealand.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field put Afghanistan to bat.
Afghanistan openers Noor Ali Zadran and Hazr atullah Zazai started on a positive note putting up 66 runs for first wicket.
Zazai was the first to go in 11th over at 34 off 28 (5 fours and a six). Next was Zadran in 12th over 31 off 38 (5 fours).
After openers departure there was no major partnership except for 35 runs partnership for fifth wicket between Nabi and Shahidi and then 21 runs for seventh wicket between Shahidi and Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Aftab Alam and Hashmatullah Shahidi too contributed 16 runs for ninth wicket and Hamid Hassan, Hashmatullah Shahidi
further added 25 runs for tenth wicket.
Jimmy Neesham was adjudged Player of the Match for his 5 for 31.
Neesham 5/31, Ferguson 4/37 were the wicket takers for New Zealand bowling Afghanistan 172 all out in 41.1 overs.
