Morocco to take CAF Champions League final to FIFA, CAS

Agency News

Rabat, June 2: Morocco's football association FRMF will take the case of the CAF Champions League final between Esperance Tunis (Tunisia) and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) to FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), head of the association, Fouzi Lekjaa, announced in Rabat.

Speaking at a press briefing at the end of a meeting of the FRMF board on Saturday, Lekjaa recalled that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has called an Emergency Executive Committee to discuss the regulatory solutions regarding the controversial incidents that took place during the second leg of the final of the CAF Champions League 2018/2019.

During the match played in Tunisia on Friday, Esperance was leading 1-0 after 60 minutes and 2-1 on aggregate when the match was halted as Wydad refused to continue playing because VAR was unavailable to judge a disallowed equaliser. The CAF President Ahmad Ahmad who attended the final spent almost 30 minutes in discussions with officials in a bid to get the game restarted.

After a 90-minute delay Esperance was declared winner of the CAF Champions League. Wydad believed that they were the victim of VAR in the first leg of the final in Morocco last weekend, as Egyptian referee Gehad Grisha ruled out a goal by them and was subsequently banned for six months by CAF referee commission which judged his performance was "poor".

"We will not hesitate to make all the appropriate decisions in time for the fairness of the Wydad Casablanca team," Fouzi Lekjaa said. "It has been shown to the world that Wydad has been subjected twice to a deal that has nothing to do with football and its spirit." (UNI)
