Paris, May 29: Reigning Roland Garros champion Simona Halep kicked off her title defense with a tough three set win against Ajla Tomljanovic on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Embarking on her first major title defense on Tuesday, Halep faced a tough test in an in-form Tomljanovic, who rallied back from dropping the opening set and had the Romanian on the ropes in the second.
Halep emerged victorious, striking 19 winners en route to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory , the WTA's official website said.
Halep looked right at home on Court Philippe-Chatrier, and she got off to a dominating start to lead 3-0 with an early break.
She had little trouble reading Tomljanovics shots, and she used her speed to cover the court and return everything with interest. In the end, a second break at 6-4 sealed the set.
The last time Halep stepped onto this court about 12 months ago, Halep sealed the greatest moment of her career by winning her first Grand Slam after reaching four previous finals. She was the second-ever Romanian to win a Grand Slam after Virginia Ruzicis feat in 1978.
