New Delhi, May 13 : India's star boxer and six-time World champion M C Mary Kom will utilise India Open boxing tournament beginning at Guwahati from May 20-24 as a platform ahead of the World championships and Olympic.
Mary Kom the winner of sixth World title in 48kg here in the capital last year will compete in the 51kg category.
The tournament will see participation of 35 male and 37 female Indian boxers. The London Olympic bronze medallist Mary had missed the Asia Championship last month and will use India Open challenge in order to qualify for the World championships and Olympic.
Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said, "The India Open is a great opportunity for the Indian boxers. In the run-up to their preparations for the World Championships, they will be facing some of the top boxers including Asian Games and World champions."
Keeping in mind the approved weight categories for Olympic qualification, some of the Indian pugilists have changed their weight categories. After her stunning performance at the Asian Championships, where she became the first Indian to win a gold in 81kg, Pooja Rani has gone back to her original weight category of 75kg. (UNI)
