Prague, May 2 : Third-seeded Wang Qiang went through to the quarterfinals of the Prague Open by defeating Mandy Minella 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, after a hard-won battle over two hours on Wednesday.
It was seven years ago, in 2012, that these two players last time competed. Wang was defeated in a three-game tug of war, but this year she proved that she is the stronger one. The Chinese player's journey in Prague Open lasted three consecutive years. In the previous two years, Wang swallowed an annual one victory one defeat and packed back home. This year, she finally enjoyed 2 victories on the Clay. This is also her second time in career to advance to the top 8 in clay tournament since last time in Strasbourg 2018, a no mean feat for the lady who are not good at playing on clay court.
Wang will next face unseeded Bernarda Pera who sent Antonia Lottner home 6-2, 6-4. Her victory in the quarterfinals will record as her best result in WTA clay event. (Xinhua)
