New Delhi, Apr 26 : Indian star wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat grabbed bronze in their respective weight categories in the Asian Wrestling Championships in Xian, China on Friday.
2016 Olympic Bronze medallist, Sakshi Malik (62 kg) had a tough task beating Hyon Gyong Mun of North Korea 9-6 to claim bronze. While 2018 Asian Games gold winner Vinesh Phogat's dominance over reigning World Championships bronze medallist Qianyu Pang fetched her bronze in 53 kg beating her opponent 8-1.
Meanwhile, Pooja Dhanda registered a disappointing show in the marquee Asian showpiece event as she lost 3-5 in her 57 kg bronze medal bout.
Earlier, on Thursday India's Divya Kakran and Manju Kumari won a bronze medal in their respective categories. Kakran won a bronze medal in 68 kg category after defeating Mongolian wrestler Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia, while Manju defeated Vietnamese wrestler Thi Huong Dao in 59kg by 11-2 to win the second bronze medal for India.
However, India's campaign got over early in the 50kg, 55kg and 76kg weight divisions when Lalita and Pooja lost their respective quarter-final bouts to bow out of the tournament. Navjot Kaur winner of gold in last championship could not repeat her feat as she lost in the quarter-final match and then in the bronze medal match lost to Kazakhstan player in the 65 kg category.
Kiran Bishnoi also lost to another Kazakhstan player 4-7. The Kazakhstan was edged out in the semi-final match thus ending Kiran's bronze medal bout. On Saturday India's Greco Roman wrestlers will be hoping to bag more medals for the country. (UNI)
