New Delhi, Apr 26 : Indian boxers Amit Panghal and Pooja Rani clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories in the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok on Friday.
Haryana-born boxer was forced to shift to the new category as the 49 kg was dropped from the Olympic programme last month by AIBA and had to bout under 52 kg but despite this he bagged gold beating Korea's Kim Inkyu. This was Panghals' second consecutive yellow metal of the year.
In the women's section India's Pooja Rani also sealed her 3rd medal at the Asian Boxing Championships after securing a thriller contest in split decision taking home second gold beating world champion Wang Lina in the 81kg weight category in the final. She had earlier won silver 2012 and bronze in 2015.
National champion Deepak Singh (49kg) took silver after being edged out in a split verdict to Nodirjon Mirzahmedov of Uzbekistan while Simranjit Kaur also bagged silver. Meanwhile, KavinderSingh Bisht display an indomitable spirit; fought with a lionheart despite his cut opening up but succumbed to an unfortunate loss in the finals.
