Shimla, Apr 15: Local boy and defending champion David Kumar is the top contender for India’s biggest mountain biking race - Hero MTB Shimla and will hope to secure his hat-trick win during the 8th edition, slated to kick off from April 19-21.
Local boy David is among the favourites and will be defending the King of Shivalik title which is awarded to the overall winner of the race while other locals in the line-up are Akash Sherpa and Akshit Gaur who won the Team of Two category last year will be teaming up once again to challenge the 10 other teams participating in the event.
Known for its tough terrain and competitive racing the route will travel from Shimla Ridge Kufri, Mashobra Bekalthi, Sarog, Kiartu, Kyarkoti and Craignano.
The Highest point of the route will be at 2450m, while the lowest is 1400m.
Participants this year include cycling groups from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chandigarh Official teams of Indian armed forces also have confirmed their participation.
International athletes from Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Colombia and Nepal have also confirmed their participation.
90 cyclists have confirmed their participation so far.
"According to Mohit Sood, Founder and Race Director this edition is expected to be diverse in terms of participating riders.
Over the years the race has been well received by cycling enthusiasts in the country. For this season, we have already clocked 90+ registrations and will be hosting cyclists from 6 nationalities. We have tweaked the race route this year to increase competitiveness this year," said Race Director. (UNI)
