Singapore, Apr 9: Indian shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap and Mugdha Agrey won their qualification matches in the men's and women's singles respectively progressing to Main Round of the Singapore Open Badminton here on Tuesday.
Kashyap easily won the first game against Malaysia's June Wei Cheam in the first round of the qualifiers but June Wei bounced back and won the second while in decider the Indian shuttler had to sweat hard as the game finished on a close note in 54 minutes.
In the second round too Kashyap had a tough task against Japan’s Yu Igarashi, but eased through to main draw to win 15-21, 21-16, 22-20 in 59 minutes.
The Indian will now play Ramus Gemke of Denmark in te first round on Wednesday. Kashyap ranked 42 in World has a 2-1 career record against 28th ranked Gemke. The Indian had an opportunity to beat the Denmark player this January at the Malaysia Masters.
In another match of the women qualifier Mugdha Agrey of India beat US Lauren Lam 16-21, 21-14, 21-15 in 44 minutes to enter the main draw and will next take on Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong on Wednesday.
In the the men's doubles match the Indian pair of Balasubramaniam Geeta and Rafale Sheoran lost in the first round.
Other players who will begin their campaign during the main draw of the tournament from Wednesday are fourth seed P V Sindhu, sixth seed Saina Nehwal, Sameer Verma, H S Prannoy B Sai Praneeth and sixth seed Kidambi Srikanth. (UNI)
