Chandigarh, Mar 22: Qualifier Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India was beaten by Jaume Munar of Spain by 7-6 (3) 6-4 in the first round of the $ 8,359,455 ATP Masters 1000 Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Twenty one years old Jaume Munar, ranked 61 took one hour and 39 minutes to overcome 29-year-old Prajnesh, ranked 84th. After a close and thrilling first set which Jaume Munar won by 7-6 (3), the Spanish player then raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set after breaking Prajnesh in the third and fifth games. With his service to follow Munar increased the lead to 5-1.
Prajnesh tried hard to bounce back into the game. He held his service after gaining advantage to reduce the margin to 2-5. Munar struggled in the eighth game and trailed 15-40 on his service. With Prajnesh, enjoying having two break points broke his rival to further narrow the margin to 3-5. The left handed player from Chennai then held his serve in the ninth game by firing his fourth ace of the match (4-5).
Munar, serving for the match, led 40-15 with two match points and wrapped up the encounter by winning the 10th game at 6-4 and the match to move into second round.
Munar won 84 per cent points (26/31) on his first service and 61 per cent (20/33) on second service. He saved one break points out of three and won three out of seven break points. His scorecard showed three aces to his credit and two double faults.
Prajnesh won 67 per cent (29/43) points on his first service and 47 per cent (16/34) on second service. The Indian player saved four out of seven break points and won two out of three break points. Prajnesh fired four aces and committed five double faults.
Prajnesh earned $ 26,430 and 26 ATP points. UNI
