New Delhi, Mar 22: Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 12th edition of Indian Premier League's (IPL) opener on Saturday at the Chepauk stadium in Chennai.
Kohli's RCB have not won a single IPL trophy, while MS Dhoni-led CSK will be looking to win it for the fourth time. They had already won the prestigious trophy in 2010, 2011 and 2018. Dhoni has been leading the CSK from the inaugural season of the cash-rich league, while Kohli took over as the captain of RCB in 2012.
The 31-year-old RCB captain said that his team would give its best on the field this season. Earlier, he had spoken about workload management for the Indian cricket team players in the run-up to the World Cup, which is slated to start from May 30 in England and Wales.
Kohli's captaincy came under criticism following India's drubbing in the recently concluded home ODI series against Australia. On the other hand, there has never been a question raised on MS Dhoni's leadership. The CSK will start its campaign from their home ground to ensure a strong support from the Chennai fans.
So far, Dhoni has played 175 IPL matches and scored 4,016 runs. The 37-year-old veteran cricketer has scored 20 half-centuries in the tournament. While, RCB skipper Kohli on the other hand, has featured in 163 IPL matches and scored 4,948 runs.
Both the teams have played 22 matches. Of these, CSK won 14 matches, while RCB has secured seven win. The remaining one match ended in a draw. RCB are heading into IPL 2019 with a six-match losing streak against the CSK. Kohli's men last beat CSK in 2014.
The CSK will donate its first IPL proceeds to the families of the CRPF jawans martyred in the Pulwama terror attack on February 14. UNI
