Kalpetta (Wayanad) Jan 25: Upsetting hopes of reaching the finals, Kerala crumbled before the bowling might of Vidarbha to lose the semi-finals by an innings and 11 runs in the Ranji Trophy here on Friday.
It was for the first time that Kerala entered the semi-finals, beating Gujarat in the same ground last week.
Kerala were thrown out of the game on the second day today with Vidharba’s pace bowlers Umesh Yadav and V S Thakur wrapping up Kerala’s second innings even before it could reach a three-digit score. While Umesh took five wickets, Thakur claimed four to contain the score of Kerala to just 91 in the second innings.
Though Kerala, batted first on the opening day on Thursday were skittled out for a paltry score of 106 but could contain Vidharba at 208, with a lead of just 102 runs.
Resuming their first innings score of 171/5 on day two, Vidharba was hoping to gain a big score. However, Kerala succeeded in containing Vidharba after they were all out for 208. For Kerala, Sandeep Warrier took five wickets, Basil Thampi three and M D Nidheesh claimed two wickets.
However, the second innings was pathetic for Kerala. The second innings witnessed Vidharba pacers wrapping the host for just 91. Though Kerala started well today in their second innings to score a decent 59/1 in the morning, the story turned upside down by noon with all the wickets gone adding only 32 runs to wrap up for 91.
It was Umesh Yadhav’s pace that made Kerala crawling in both the innings, only to bat a total score of 197, eleven runs less than their first innings score of 208. He claimed seven wickets in the game.
