Scintillating performance by Peter Handscomb(73) and 50-run partnership in the fifth wicket helped Australia to reach at a decent score of 288/5 in the first ODI against Australia at Sydney on Saturday.

Handscomb’s urge to get fast runs became his Achilles’ heel and while hitting to sweeper cover for Dhawan stopped his innings at 73. A 50-run stand up in the fifth wicket between Handscomb and Stoinis off 50balls helped Australia to build a better score of 288.

Earlier Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to bat first against India at Sydney.

For Australia, both Shaun Marsh (54) and Usman Khawaja (59) made half centuries. While Kuldeep Yadav scalped Shaun Marsh(54) and Usman Khawaja (59) surrendered to Ravindra Jadeja. Though Alex Carey also contributed 24 runs, captain Aaron Finch(6) failed to perform.

For India, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav scalped two wickets each and Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket. The other highlight of Sydney ODI was Bhuvaneshwar Kumar became the 19th Indian to complete 100 ODI wickets. He reached at this milestone by scalping the wicket of Australian captain Aaron Finch.

India entered with three seamers- Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed and two spinners- Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

India got a major setback on Friday when KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were banned from the series and were asked to return to India after facing heavy backlash for their comments on a TV chat show ‘Koffee with Karan”. Pandya was replaced by all-rounder Jadeja.
