Prithvi Shaw, Pujara take lead; India 133/1 at lunch

Prithvi Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara took control of the game by kicking up a solid start in the first test against West Indies at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Thursday. India went into lunch with 133 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket on Day 1. Prithvi Shaw impressed in his debut test match scoring an unbeaten 75 in the morning session. The 18-year-old opener brought up his half-century from just 56 balls, becoming the youngest Indian to achieve the feat on debut. Pujara (56*) brought up his 19th half-century during his stay at the centre.

India got a setback at the beginning by losing KL Rahul for a duck. Shannon Gabriel was the lone wicket-taker for the Windies.

After winning the toss India, India captain Virat Kohli opted to bat against the Windies in good batting conditions. Kuldeep Yadav was included in the playing XI for form a three-man spin attack. Windies is playing without their regular skipper Jason Holder and Kraigg Brathwaite is leading the side in his absence.

The conditions look good for batting but the batsmen need to apply them well at the wicket. For the visitors, a lot will depend upon how Shai Hope and Roston Chase perform with the bat. Three of Chase’s centuries in Test cricket have come against India and Pakistan – a proof of his spin negotiating skills.
