Bridge players sought PT Usha’s blessings before clinching Gold at Asiad

Kolkata, Sep 4: Gold medal winning bridge players from this city will fly in New Delhi today to attend a reception to be hosted by the PMO office, said they had sought blessings from the former "Sprint Queen" PT Usha before playing final to clinch gold in the men's pair event.

Briefing media persons about his experience at the games village for being a non-descriptive player as very few have idea about the game of bridge even among the Indian contingent, Shibnath Dey Sarkar said he used to meet PT Usha almost every day and before final match he sought her blessings and had selfie to boost up his mental strength.

When Usha querried “ Why do you need my blessing” Sarkar replied that he was one of the aspirants for gold medal and was going to play the final in the pairs event. Fifty-six-year-old Sarkar pairing with Pranob Bardhan (60) earned India the 15th and final gold medal by beating strongest rivals China in the title clash.

India also bagged two bronze medals in the mens' and mixed team championships as the 30-member bridge squad helped the Indian contingent to take the medal tally to 69, largest ever for India in the Asian Games. (UNI)
