Jakarta, Aug 30: Defending champions Indian Men's Hockey team lost 6-7 to Malaysia in the penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals at the Asian Games here on Thursday.
In the regulation time both the teams levelled the score at 2-2 as the game went into penalty shoot-out, but SV Sunil missed the decisive shoot-out and Malaysia made their way to the finals. India had to settle with bronze.
It was repeat of 2010 Guangzhou Asiad semifinal, where Malaysia had beaten India in extra time after being held 3-3 in the regular period. Interestingly the player who brought Malaysia back into the game this evening after they trailed 1-2 till 59th minute was same Abdul Rahim Muhammed Razi who had scored the winner in Guangzhou.
The defeat not only wrecked coach Harendra Singh’s dream of creating legacy by winning back to back Asian Games gold but also ruined India’s chances of qualifying for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The record 76 goals the Indian had scored in the five league matches in which skipper and goal keeper Sreejesh was not tested at all, turned out to be their undoing.
