Vinesh Phogat who made India proud by winning the gold medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta, arrived in Delhi on Saturday night to a rousing welcome by family and friends. She is the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. But her family and fans got more than what was expected when she got engaged at the airport parking lot to her long time friend Somvir Rathi, also a national level wrestler.
The media went into a frenzy hearing the announcement. There was much joy and celebration all around as the pair exchanged rings with the blessings of family members. A jubilant Vinesh and Somvir also cut a cake as the day turned out to be Vinesh’s birthday too.
Somvir who has known Vinesh for the past seven years works with the Indian Railways as Travelling Ticket Examiner [TTE].
Vinesh looked elated through the night with her gold medal around her neck and the Indian flag draped around her. To add to her joy was the ring on her finger now. Fans could not get enough of this wonderfully surprising moment and they cheered her all the way. She was greeted with flowers which she gleefully accepted and she distributed sweets to share her joy.
Vinesh made an official announcement on social media with the message, “Glad you pinned me for life”.
