In the India Open boxing tournament in New Delhi yesterday, M.C. Kom fought her way to the final. Men boxers Shiva Thapa and Manoj were not so lucky and had to be content with bronze medals as they lost their matches in the semifinals.
There was a major upset in the men’s draw when top-seeded Shiva [60kg] went down to Manish Kaushik. Former Commonwealth gold medallist Manoj Kumar also made a shock exit going down to Dinesh in a closely contested bout.
However, Amit Panghal [49kg], Asian bronze medallist, advanced to the final after a split verdict, over Nutlai Lalbiakimma.
T.K. Shyam Kumar [49kg] and Satish Kumar [+91 kg] also made it to the final.
In the women’s section, five-time world champion Mary Kom [49kg] outplayed Mongolian Altansetseg Lutsaikhan. With her aggressive approach, Mary quickly got the upper hand in the first two rounds. She looked tired in the last few minutes but managed to rally on and punch her way to victory. Mary next faces Josie Gabuco of Philippines.
Top-ranked Sarita Devi [60kg] won over Priyanka in an evenly matched contest.
