Sloane Stephens won her first US Open title defeating fellow compatriot and close friend Madison Keys in 61mins hitting a decisive score of 6-3, 6-0.
On court her tennis was pitch perfect and remained commanding. She showed her poise under pressure as true champions do. Few could have imagined eleven months ago that Sloane with her foot injury would make such a wonderful recovery and win the biggest prize of her life. From a ranking of 957 she has been catapulted to No. 17.
The final of the Women’s Open Singles had a family feel while long time friends turned rivals played it out reminiscent of the rivalry of the William sisters. Soon after the match Stephens rushed to the nets to warmly embrace her friend in a touching scene in front of 23,00o fans.
In the Men’s Singles Rafael Nadal won the US Open for thethird time beating Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 32, Anderson was no match for ’Rafa’ and the finals turned out to be pretty much one sided. Nadal plagued by injuries for the past two seasons has come back with a bang and won five titles in 2017.
Spain’s ‘King of Clay’ has won 15 Grand Slam titles, the 2008 Olympic gold and was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the year in 2011. With this win he adds one more feather to his victory cap.
