Gangtok, Jan 15: Chief Minister P S Tamang on Wednesday inaugurated the Maghey Sankranti fair and Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans (SARAS ) fair at Jorethang in South Sikkim.
The chief minister and his wife Shradha Tamang visited 33 different departmental stalls set up at the five-day-long annual fair.
The theme of 2020 mela is ‘Hamro Sanskriti, Hamro Gaurav’( Our Culture, Our Pride).
Addressing the massive gathering, the CM said: "Sakranti day is observed at the end of Paush and beginning of Magh,the Hindu lunar month. It is the time to have tubers and yams. The state government is celebrating Maghey Mela with focus on Sports."
The state aspiring to inculcate sense of sportsmanship among the youth has organised football tournaments,in Gangtok and Jorethang.
The chief minister also announced turning Jorethang into a tourist destination. (UNI)
