Gangtok, May 14: The adverse climatic condition and impact has created a disaster for Yaks in the higher altitude of North Sikkim.
The North District administration team, including Block Administration Centre Chungthang and Veterinary officers, scaled the heights up to Cho –Lhamu, to take stock of health status of the Yaks. The team has been giving Restoral to relieve them of the stress and Vitamin injections, since yesterday. They have also started providing some relief. The owners are provided crushed maize, wheat flour, salt and mineral mixture to feed the surviving ones. They are at a great economic loss due to the death of 300 Yaks earlier.
Sub –Divisional Magistrate Subhash Ghimerey said that though the roads are still open in North, it is difficult to hike up to Lahsar valley, to look into the condition of Yaks there. Snow is making it difficult. Bodies of dead Yaks are decomposing. The Yak herders have identified their dead yaks and now they have the responsibility to bury them. We will be moving to Lahsar valley after two days, joined by Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). UNI
