Gangtok, Mar 31 : Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, addressing a mammoth gathering of six constituencies, said the 32 Assembly seats have to be enhanced to 40 in order to do justice to all the communities.
He said, this would imply 12 seats for non-tribal Nepalese, who constitute 60 percent of the population, and 13 for B-L, 2 SC and 5 LTs and questioned the validity of such a formula.
The CM said it is not Constitutionally justifiable to make 40 per cent have 13 seats out of the 32 assembly seats and 60 percent of the population also 12.
This reminds us of the parity formula of the Chogyal against which Democratic Revolution was carried out.
Now again, do the democratic rights have to be given up? Hence, SDF had suggested that the Sikkim Assembly seats be increased to 40 seats from the existing 32 seats, when seats for Limboo-Tamangs are reserved.
