Gangtok, Mar 10: President of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) Bharat Basnett said here today that his party is ready to face elections in the state.
"Only Congress can save Sikkim and its identity. We welcome elections in April as announced by the Election Commission," he said. "As we are the biggest party, Congress will always act as the guardian for Sikkim. State ruled by regional parties, need to be ruled by national party like Congress now. We are open to parties desirous of alliance if they rise above the dirty politics," Mr Basnett stated.

Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee has already forwarded a list of 25 candidates to Congress High Command. "Whatever Congress high command decides, we will accept,"the Congress leader said.
Basnett claimed Congress was a better political party than BJP. "We indulge in politics of principles, not commercial motive,"he said.
Speaking on local issues he said his party wants reservation of seats for Limboo-Tamang communities out of existing 32 seats in Legislative Assembly to avoid breaching Article 371F which provides special provisions for Sikkim.

He further claimed that people of Sikkim are not happy with the ruling government. They want change and that is the reason that they want the opposition parties to form alliances. Basnett said he has nothing against Sikkim Krantikari Morcha(SKM) alliance with a national party. "Though political alliances do happen during election times, but if the BJP is forming alliance with a regional party, it only indicates its political bankruptcy,"he remarked. UNI
