Children, the new year is here, bringing with it new hopes and dreams.A new year is like a new page in a journal. We are the ones who decide what will be written on it.We can write notes of love, compassion and peace or we can fill the pages with notes of anger, selfishness, and indifference. The choice is ours.
When our finger accidentally pokes the eye, we don’t chop it off. On the contrary, we use the same finger to gently rub and soothe the eye. This is because we know that the eye and the finger are both parts of our self. In a similar manner, once we are able to see divinity in everyone, then compassion will fill our each and every action. Furthermore, we will be able to forgive and forget other people’s mistakes just as easily as we are able to forgive and forget our own.
Once, a husband and wife were fighting over something and ceased talking to one another. Neither of them was willing to initiate a reconciliation. Even after a week, they were still not ready to talk. Finally, the husband couldn’t stand it anymore. He started searching for something in every nook and cranny of the house.Watching her husband combing the house for something obviously very valuable and important—kneeling down low, standing atop tables and chairs—the wife finally couldn’t control herself and asked, “What are you looking for?” This is just what he wanted to hear. He answered, “Your sweet voice.” Hearing these loving words, the wife smiled lovingly at him, totally forgetting their complaints and differences.
Once we can forgive and forget, peace and happiness will definitely embrace our lives.
On this New Year’s Day, let us make a resolution that we will not go to sleep without doing at least one act that has brought happiness and comfort to others. Perhaps, we can send a loving letter or an email to someone who we know feels enmity towards us. This will help put out the fire of anger in that person’s heart and allow flowers of happiness to bloom there instead.Let us not forget to express gratitude to our loved ones and acquaintances. These are some ways to make the new year truly new, blessed and divine. Through such good actions, we are, in a way, attaining a new birth.
Throughout this new year, may we let go of our fear, anxiety and hatred, thereby allowing our mind to become peaceful. May our heart be filled with compassion. May the sun of discernment rise in our intellect.
