Squall hits Barmer pandal, 15 dead


A sudden squall in  border district of Barmer in Rajasthan led to the death of 15 people on Sunday afternoon, an official said.

The deceased had gathered at large tents erected to listen to 'Ram Katha' discourse at  Jasole village,  the Barmer SDM, Mr.  Rohit Kumar said. They were electrocuted when the squall caused a short circuit.  Some 30 people were wounded.

The region witnessed a spell of heavy rain and gusty winds on Sunday.

Officials feared that the death toll could mount.

The state Chief Minister, Mr.  Ashok Gehlot, has  condoled the deaths, as did the Prime Minister’s office and both directed district administration to their extend assistance.

'Collapse of a ‘Pandal’ in Rajasthan’s Barmer is unfortunate. My thoughts are with the bereaved families and I wish the injured a quick recovery,' the  PMO message read.
