Brahmagupta was an accomplished Indian astronomer and mathematician. He was born in 598 and died c.665. He had a profound and direct influence on Islamic and Byzantine astronomy. His fame rests mainly on his ‘Brahma Sphuta Siddhanta’ – Correctly Established Doctrine of Brahma. It was translated into Arabic in Baghdad in 771 and had impacted Islamic Math and Astronomy.
He also wrote ‘Khandakhadyaka’ [A Piece Eatable] an astronomical handbook that employed Aryabhata’s system of starting each day at midnight. Besides astronomy, he was a great mathematician and laid the foundation for algorithms, equations and mensuration in arithmetic and algebra. He was the first to define zero.
