Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi was the first Indian woman to become a qualified physician in 1887. She was also the first Indian woman trained in western medicine. She was the first Indian woman to travel to the United States of America. She studied at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennysylvania.

She was born on 31 March, 1865 at Kalyan, Maharashtra. She died in Pune on 26 February, 1887. She died of tuberculosis shortly before her 22nd birthday.

Anandibai was married to Gopalrao Joshi at the young age of 9 years as was the custom in those days. Her husband was 20 years her senior. However, she was fortunate that her husband encouraged her to pursue her studies and interest in the sciences. He sent her to America to study medicine and advised her to set an example in the society by pursuing higher studies.

A crater on Venus has been named ‘Joshee’ in her honour.
